Glamour™
II - Frequently Asked Questions
Q1.
How do I apply Glamour™ II?
Please refer to the Breathing
Color application video and the Glamour
II Application Instructions PDF
to learn how to properly apply the product.
Q2.
How much should I dilute Glamour™ II?
Glamour™ II can be diluted by different amounts of water depending
on application method, media being used, humidity and personal preference.
For the following application methods on canvas we recommend the following
dilutions:
Roller Foam Application - ideal dilution is 70% Glamour™
II to 30% water (roughly 2:1 Glamour™ II:Water). You may experiment
with using less water, but we don't recommend using more. Water is only
a vehicle to allow the coating to spread around more easily and to speed
the drying process.
HVLP or Roll Coating Machine - dilution should be up
to 50% (1:1) with distilled water but not more. Depending upon your
HVLP gun, you may be able to dilute by only 30% (roughly 2:1 Glamour™
II:Water) with distilled water, which would be ideal for greater strength.
Q3.
How long does Glamour™ II take to dry?
This product, like any other varnish and veneer should be allowed time
to dry sufficiently before mounting or stretching. Glamour™ II
is a water-based coating therefore drying time can vary depending on
conditions such as temperature and humidity. Generally it will dry from
30 minutes to two hours and most frequently around 40 minutes to an
hour.
Q4.
Can I use Glamour™ II on paper and other substrates, or only canvas?
Glamour II can be used on most water resistant substrates. It will however
smear the ink on a print if the substrate is not water resistant. Many
people are successfully using Glamour II with watercolour papers, canvases,
and vinyl products. Application onto papers is generally more difficult
than onto canvas and requires more care
Q5.
Can I use
Glamour™ II on my dye based inks?
Because Glamour™ II Veneer is a water-based coating, you must
be more careful when applying it to canvas that has been printed with
dye-based ink than with pigment-based inks. Therefore prints should
only be coated once they have had a chance to completely dry for 24
hours. When coating, use very little pressure with the roller as to
not disturb the dye ink. If you allow ample drying time and do not apply
pressure to the roller when coating and you are using a water resistant
canvas, Glamour II should work very well without any problems.
Q6.
Should I coat my prints before or after I stretch?
Because this product is very pliable and stretchable, most customers
choose to coat before stretching – it will not crack or become
brittle over time like many other coatings are known to do. Additionally
it helps to protect the canvas print at the time of stretching and commonly
eliminates the inks cracking around the edges of the stretcher bars.
Q7.
Can I store Glamour™
II after dilution?
Breathing Color™ recommends that you mix the required amount of
Glamour™ II for each print job as the diluted product may be prone
to separate and harden over time. If you do need to store some that
is pre-mixed seal it in an air-tight container and use as quickly as
possible.
Q8.
Can I paint on top of the applied coating?
Glamour II has been known to work with various artist paints for embellishment,
however it is always recommended that you perform a test with a small
scrap of coated canvas to asses for any negative reactions.
Q9.
Can I roll up a canvas print once coated with Glamour™
II?
Once the print has completely dried, you should have no problem rolling
it up. Keep in mind that when the print is exposed to extremely hot
or humid temperatures, it may have a tendency to soften and stick to
itself. For this reason it is always recommended to protect each print
with a sheet of an acid-free barrier paper.
Q10.
How do I clean up after using Glamour™
II?
You should only need to use water to clean your roller and tray after
coating as Glamour™ II is a water-based product and washes away
easily. Make sure you remove all of the coating otherwise it will dry
hard and any remaining product may effect your next coating job.
